OSRS’s gear progression isn’t as linear compared to other MMO’s. Depending on what one is playing, whether it be a restrictive build, attacking certain enemies, or lacking wealth, it will affect the gear you’re ought to use. Nonetheless, OSRS still has a general gear progression path that you can follow to guide you in the right direction.
Ranged DPS Calculation
Ranged is a skill that usually has easier linear progression because the max and accuracy hit increase with just a single skill. It’s also more efficient since most of the high-level equipment only needs a minimum defense level that can be trained with either Melee or long-range. More than that, it’s among the most important gear set players can focus on since it can be used for staple money makers.
Even so, Ranged GPS is calculated in a different way than Melee. Typically, the ranged weapon you are using only provides ranged accuracy while your max hit is determined by the ammunition you are using, which, at the same time, provides a bonus to your ranged strength and level. It’s also important to remember not to settle for poor ammunition because better ammo dramatically improves your DPS.
That being said, making every piece of gold go as far as it can will ultimately help your account’s efficiency. This guide will focus on getting the most DPS possible out of your ranged equipment and the most useful gear pieces you can buy in general.
Untradable unlocks
Before getting into Ranged Gear Progression, it’s essential that you first know some of the most useful untradable unlocks that can help with ranged training.
- Ava’s Devices
The attractor, accumulator, and assembler require 30, 50, and 70 ranged, respectively. You can unlock these once you finish Animal Magnetism quests. Additionally, they are highly useful since they provide ranged accuracy bonus and strength and help retrieve ammo for you. 20% of this ammo aids in disintegrating against enemies wherein the rest is retrieved or hits the ground.
It’s most recommended that you unlock these as soon as you obtain the range level required except for the assembler, which you should unlock after killing Vorkath. Moreover, while the accumulator and attractor DPS upgrade is considered relatively small than others, these will help you save a ton of money in the future and is already a reasonable upgrade.
- Void
This outfit can be unlocked at pest control yet typically requires about 10 to 15 hours of minigame alongside the Western Hard Diary for you to get.
Unlike no other ranged armor, this one provides a range bonus among the void outfits. It provides a 10% damage bonus and 10% accuracy bonus. Moreover, this is best with low-defense monsters and gives a much higher accuracy bonus, making it better DPS against monsters with even a slight range defense.
- Barrow’s Gloves
The best in the slot for ranged is Barrow’s Gloves which require the completion of a recipe for disaster. Despite not being a huge upgrade, these are great for all setups.
Basic Setup
The first upgrade you should get is a blowpipe which is a fairly newbie trap because even with only adamant darts, it’s already 450k GP per hour to use. So before you upgrade be sure you can afford it. It’s also so incredibly OP everywhere such that when you’re doing something with ranged, you should be using it since they’re one of the few weapons that give ranged strength and accuracy without reducing attack speed.
- Blessed D’hide boots
The first gear pieces you should upgrade to are Blessed D’hideboots. Compared to snakeskin, these have a =4 ranged attack bonus and +1 prayer bonus over snakeskin, only 850k for a pair, which is a bigger upgrade than an archer’s ring or fury.
- Black Mask or slayer helm
If you’re doing any Slayer past this point with Ranged, you should get an imbued Black Mask or Slayer helmet since it provides a 15% ranged accuracy and strength bonus against monsters on your slayer tasks for only 800k GP.
- Archer’s ring
Assuming you can imbue an archer string at NMZ, you can double attack ranged bonus from four to eight with a significant DPS upgrade using Archer’s ring.
- Swap Black D’hide armor for Blessed D’hide
It’s cheapest to start with chaps and then the body. Typically the cheapest are either the ancient or gothic variant. These are simple straight upgrades to Black D’hide and provide a +1 prayer bonus for each piece.
Intermediate Setup
After that, you’ll now have a basic setup that works well in most locations that need Ranged. The following options may be fairly expensive, but the next two items are considered big upgrades.
- Rigour
The next upgrade you should go for is Rigour. You can buy anguish and then sell it to afford rigor while working your way up. However, Rigour is such a massive upgrade that it’s worth rushing for. Here, it provides a +2% attack, +23% damage, and +25% defense, unlike Eagle eyes, which only boosts your range level by 15%.
- Necklace of Anguish
After unlocking Rigour, you can now go back to buying back the Necklace of Anguish. It provides a +5 Ranged attack and strength upgrade over the fury. It’s also a very large DPS upgrade and one of the few equipment pieces that affect your max hit and accuracy, making it extremely powerful.
High-end setup
Upgrades beyond the Intermediate setup are incredibly marginal.
- Pegasians
These provide +5 ranged accuracy over the Blessed D’hide boots, dropping the prayer bonus and gaining more defense. Moreover, they can also be usable while on task or wearing void since you can always wear boots, unlike the Armadyl pieces. The GPS is also a marginal increase for about 0.5% DPS upgrade but is best in the slot, which you are paying for.
- Armadyl Armor
At 83 mil for the whole set, the Armadyl armor is the final upgrade you can go for. While the helmet is really useful, it can provide the biggest upgrade, with a +5 Ranged attack bonus over the Archer’s helm.
On the other hand, the armor is an incredibly marginal upgrade with a 0.5% DPS for the full set. It provides a bit more magic defense and slightly better defense across the board while keeping the prayer bonus. However, it can be useless for most places, especially when you’re already this far into your account.
