Crystal tools are up after dragon equipment in terms of effectiveness. Some examples we can compare are regular harpoon and Dragon harpoon. In these cases, crystal harpoons have a 35% and 12.5% increased catch rate respectively. Another example is the crystal pickaxe which has a 3% increased mining speed compared to dragon pickaxe.

This makes dragon axe 4.5% slower than crystal pickaxe. One of the drawbacks is you need to charge the shards. Crystal shards are worth about 17k and each shard is equal to 100 charges and 1 charge costs 170 GP. When you include this with the axe (worth 44k), pickaxe (worth 3.2 million), and harpoon (worth 985k) then it looks like not worth it but in certain places, it is very much worth it.

Requirement

You need to complete the song of the elves to equip the crystal tools. You need 71 skills in mining, fishing, and woodcutting. Other than that you also need 70 attacks and 50 agility skills to wield it and 76 smithing and crafting to make them. You can buy only part of the item in Grand Exchange and if you don’t have the skills, then you will need extra 60 crystal shards worth 1.02 million for an NPC to make it. If you have an elven signet or celestial signet there is a 1 in 10 chance you will not consume a charge when using crystal tools.

Comparison

For axe you can use it on redwoods, Yews, Magics, and Sulliuscep.

  • Dragon axe XP per hour – 73.2K
  • Crystal axe XP per hour – 84.6K

I used 191 charges for one hour which cost 32.4k. 

For harpoon, you can use it for tuna, swordfish, sharks, and at Tempoross. 

  • Dragon Harpoon XP per hour – 20.9k
  • Crystal harpoon XP per hour – 22.8k

I used 177 charges for one hour cost 30k.

For pickaxe, you can use it at Zalcano and volcanic mines.

  • Dragon pickaxe XP per hour – 19.8k
  • Crystal pickaxe XP per hour – 23.5k

I used 82 charges for one hour cost 13.9K

Conclusion

From this, you can see this crystal tool is worth it at some places which I listed above. The ratio of money you use to buy the item and charges for shard should be less than the benefit and profit you get. That is why it is worth it in those areas. Other areas are probably not worth it and you should avoid buying crystal tools.
